Like most of my fellow MLOGs I've been spending most of my time on my thesis, but I did manage to sneak in some fun this past Monday on Patriot's Day. For those not in the know Patriot's Day is a holiday here in Massachusetts commemorating the Battles of Lexington and Concord. MIT gives students Monday and Tuesday off, and there are a variety of activities going on, including the Boston Marathon, a battle reenactment, and a Boston Red Sox game.
A common theme here at MIT is that there's so much to do and to learn that it's like drinking from a fire hose, and for anyone new to Boston there's even more to do exploring the city. With that in mind I had to prioritize my day off. Considering that the only thing I can think of more boring than running 26.2 miles is watching other people run that far, I decided to skip the marathon. I'm told the battle reenactments are quite good, but there was no way I was making the 5:30 AM start time in Lexington. That left the Red Sox game, and I was lucky enough to win tickets for it through the MIT Activities Committee ticket lottery.
This was my first trip to Fenway since I moved to the Boston area, and only the second in my life. You won't convince a Cubs fan like me that any ballpark is better than Wrigley Field, but Fenway is a pretty cool place. The new owners have put in a lot of work on the stadium and there's lots going on in the Kenmore Square neighborhood. The actual game was a great one too, as the Sox won it on a homer by Mark Loretta with 2 outs in the 9th. It was a good time and a great way to blow off some steam after all the thesis work that's been going on.
